Blog for day 9

Movie critic Mark Palermo compellingly writes, "The Great Debaters handles conventions well, making an important piece of history affecting and resonant."
What do you think Palermo means by this statement. Please describe. Also, do you agree with his analysis? Explain.

Personally, after watching the movie. I can believe that "Great Debaters" does relate alot to our history. It talks of racial and connotative expressions used. Not that still many people still do not use them to this day. It talks of in the past and segregation, and the wars that people had to go through with each other. I think hes besically just trying to show you what has happened inthe past, is still also affecting us now, and will continue too, into the future. But like the "great debate" you have to live and let go and take everyday one step at a time.

I'm pretty sure resonant in this context, means that it has a lasting presence or effect.

I think that "handles conventions well" in the statement basically means that the movie showed a piece of history that happened, while trying not to point the blame at any one specific race or problem, but just showing some of the things that happened in the 30s, and will possibly last a long time. It helps inspire people and show scenes of happiness and tragic equally.

What I believe the critic is saying is that the movie is deeply moving and rich in tone. The movie is particularly effective in conveying the troubles races faced during that time frame and how the small debate team persevered through racial hatred, overcoming self-doubts and betrayal. You rose when the actors rose and felt disappointment when things didn't go to plan accordingly.

Mark Palermo is simply saying that the film follows all the rules, but also makes this historic story unforgettable by touching the hearts and minds of viewers. I agree with Mr. Palermo a great deal – The Great Debaters was one of the most touching films I’ve seen in my lifetime. I felt just about every emotion possible, including sadness, madness, empowerment, and hatred. It combined all of the right elements to appeal to the emotions in a number of ways.

Well.....I did not see the movie because I was not here but from the context like Meghan said, palermo uses conventions in the context of issues in the movie and who those issues where handled will be everlasting when he say they are resonant.

The Great Debaters is a wonderful movie and it's makes people want to change the world. The Great Debaters were very well-disciplines and professional when they went to the debates. Sometimes you have to take what comes at you and learn from it.

i agree with what Mr. Palermo most everything in the movie was tone down possible not to afend anyone in particular. for people of color we teen to understand this issue of black and white better because we were on the receiving end of the injustice of racism. but can you envision being in the south in this time period and being caught on one side or the other, and seeing what was going on at first hand, what would you do? even though the content of the story is water down to make it more palletable for the audience it is still a great movie.

To me the phrases "affecting and resonant" this means that the issues of the movie were meant to leave a long lasting impression on you.

This movie shows how history in our country has changed over the past century. I learned from powerful and dramatic scenes that life was a hardship for African Americans and the pride that they took in order to succeed through segregation.

From Duane
Yes I agree with Palermo, The "Great Debaters" shows us that even though we are in the 21st century, alot still has'nt changed. The racism is not thrown in our faces, it's more business like. It gives you a better understanding of how very strong black men still had to put up with despite how strong they were.

I personally thought this was an excellent movie. I understand the attempt was there as to not offend anyone, but the movie spoke the truth and possibly enlightened those who may not have been aware of the extremes that occured in this country's past. The movie depicted a messages of not accepting defeat and conquering your fears. I believe it also illustrated the importance of education and knowledge over agression and physical contact.

I do Believe that the great debaters did bring the early 1900's to life and showed those who were willing to watch a more indepth presentation of what like was indeed like, for african americans, and on top of that it proved that when you set your mind to it you can make yourself better than what people think you can do.

I think that he means that the movie properly portrayed that events that happened and also where the south was during that time period. Not only was there heavy racism but also oppression of the poor no matter what race. It brought light to what was a little known yet major event in history

I believe he is saying that there is a lot of truth being said in the movie. Which makes it more relevant and easy, even for a mass of people, to understand making it an important piece of history. I also believe by affecting and resonant he meant it is powerful and will have a lasting affect on people for generations to come.

The Great Debaters, in my opinon was an excellent movie. It showed how history has progressed and things have changed. I liked the movie for a few reasons. One of them was it shows that with a little patience, courage and some understanding you can accomplish things you never thought possible. I will agree that Palermo did an excellent job on pointing out that it handles conventions well.

The movie showed us how things were back in the day and how the teenagers focused on what they wanted and worked hard to get it by winning the championship debate. The movie showed us all the emotions of being black and white in that era.

This movie is affecting and resonant. After watching this movie it makes me analyze how far we've come. It has a lasting affect on how things were and how hard it was to rise above adversity. It's hard to do anything if you have in your mind initially that youre not going to succeed.

I agree with this analysis because the movie deals with issues that where very true of the times and they are still resonant to this day. The movie is powerful and shows that hard work pays off. There is always a way to overcome obstacles.

The movie definitely handles convention giving a clear and concise point of the struggles back then. Like most of the bloggers have said, it has made a deep impact on history and will continue to remind us of how difficult life was and how we should prepare our future.
